Sunshine Iris Nursery, Lockhart
Nestled in the gentle rolling hills of Lockhart is Sunshine Iris Nursery, owned by the mother-and-daughter team of Mandy and Elissa Strong. To allow for continued expansion since acquiring the business in 2013, the pair moved more than 20,000 irises and daylilies to their newest location this year at Mandy’s home “Wargam.” An agronomist by trade, Elissa shares her mother’s life-long love of gardening, fostered by women in earlier generations of their family. She studied agriculture and agribusiness, working for 5 years in Central West NSW before returning home to the Riverina. The nursery boasts more than 600 varieties of irises, specialising in the older vintage bearded varieties such as tall, median, and dwarf. Elissa also actively stays up-to-date about new varieties from breeders around the world. The 100-plus varieties of daylilies include large, doubles, spider types and miniatures. Customers can order online all year-round and Elissa loves connecting with people around Australia who share her passion for these flowers. The nursery is at its most spectacular during bloom every October, when it becomes a stunning ocean of vibrant rainbow colours: a sight that never fails to wow visitors!
