Magpies Nest, Wagga Wagga
Twenty years ago, chefs Chris and Wendy Whyte found an 1860’s first settlement stone barn five minutes from Wagga Wagga’s CBD. They soon set about transforming the barn into a place to share their passion for local produce and olive oil production. The Magpies Nest and Riverina Olive Oil were born.
Overlooking the Murrumbidgee River, with sweeping views of the property’s olive trees and vineyard, the Magpies Nest has alchemy between the kitchen and fresh local produce. Now with daughter Hayley at the helm, their reputation for bespoke weddings precedes them. Offering exclusive use of 20 acres, a purpose built ceremony area and a menu that reflects the personalities of the couple.
In the restaurant, seasonal dishes draw on regional produce for inspiration. The generous $55 set menu includes artisan bread, salad, tapas (referred to as ‘hots’) and a selection of mains and desserts. The wine list includes the Whyte’s Magpie Wines range, and the dishes are as delightful on the page as they are on the fork. Think braised scotch pork with pomegranate napping, cabbage hot and wokky, caramelised pepper pear.
